Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, September 11, 2026, addressed the Leaders' Plenary Session of the BRICS Business Forum convened at the Bharat Mandapam convention center in New Delhi. Organised as a key preliminary engagement of the 18th BRICS Summit hosted under India's 2026 chairship, the forum witnessed high-level participation from global leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, and Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira, alongside senior policymakers, trade delegates, and corporate executives representing the expanded 11-member bloc.

In his address, Prime Minister Modi underscored the decisive structural transformation of emerging economies over the past two decades. He pointed out that while global Gross Domestic Product (GDP) increased approximately 2.5 times during the last 20 years, the collective economic output of BRICS economies grew 4.5 times over the same timeframe. Stressing that emerging markets now drive global dynamism, the Prime Minister noted that this collective economic strength should be utilized constructively to formulate inclusive, resilient solutions to shared international challenges.

Strategic Focus on Trade, Openness, and Supply Chains

The Prime Minister emphasized that at a juncture when international trade faces rising fragmentation, unilateral tariffs, and defensive protectionism, multilateral collaboration remains essential:

* Building Economic Bridges: Prime Minister Modi stated that while trade barriers are escalating across parts of the global economy, India is committed to building economic bridges, pointing out that since 2014 the country has entered into free trade pacts with nearly 40 countries to expand trade integration. * Resilient Value Chains: The Forum highlighted the imperative to de-risk global trade by creating diversified, secure value chains across manufacturing, advanced technology, energy, and agriculture, preventing single-source vulnerabilities. * Safety of Maritime Routes: Noting that trade flows rely on stability, Modi highlighted that international commerce can only accelerate when sea lanes, shipping channels, and global seafarers remain safe and protected.

Fostering Innovation and Youth Employment

The BRICS Business Forum serves as an institutional platform bringing together government decision-makers, financial institutions, and industry leaders to foster foreign direct investment, technology co-development, and sustainable development.

Addressing the gathering, leaders concurred that the expanded bloc—which accounts for nearly 49.5 percent of the world's population and 40 percent of global economic output—must place youth empowerment at the center of its agenda. Collaborative initiatives must prioritize startup incubation, digital skill development, micro-, small-, and medium-sized enterprise (MSME) integration, and green energy investments to ensure sustainable job generation and long-term socio-economic progress across the Global South.
