Prime Minister Narendra Modi today flagged off India’s first indigenous hydrogen-powered passenger train, named NaMo Green Rail, from Jind to Sonipat in Haryana.

The hydrogen fuel cell-powered train will operate on the Jind-Sonipat section of Northern Railway, covering the 89-km route in two hours with stops at 12 stations.

The sky-blue and white hydrogen train uses fuel cell technology to generate electricity, producing only water vapour and zero carbon emissions. It reduces dependence on fossil fuels, eliminates the need for overhead electrification, and supports sustainable transport. With 10 coaches and a 3,200 HP propulsion system, it is among the longest and most powerful hydrogen-powered passenger trains.

With this, India has joined a select group of countries with operational hydrogen-powered trains, marking an important step towards adopting clean and sustainable mobility in the railway sector.

PM Modi also inaugurated several projects and laid the foundation stone for a series of development initiatives worth ₹14,700 crore at Eklavya Stadium in Jind.

The Prime Minister also handed over housing keys to beneficiaries under the PM Awas Yojana.
