In a major judicial directive, Pakistan’s Supreme Court today ordered government authorities to transfer jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan to Islamabad’s Shifa International Hospital for a comprehensive medical examination within the next few days. The significant legal development came as a three-member Supreme Court bench heard multiple petitions filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) advocates and family members seeking the founder’s immediate hospitalization and regular access to his relatives. In its formal ruling, the apex court emphasized that the order was issued strictly keeping in view Khan’s deteriorating health conditions and upholding the fundamental constitutional guarantee of the right to life alongside access to adequate medical facilities.
To safeguard the healthcare rights of the former prime minister, the court directed prison and state administration officials to establish a dedicated medical board. The bench explicitly instructed that Khan’s personal physician along with his sister, Uzma Khan, must be associated with the medical board during his evaluation and treatment. Furthermore, the court mandated that authorities must facilitate weekly, uninterrupted meetings between Imran Khan and his family members. This landmark ruling was delivered just a day after the Superintendent of Adiala Jail—where the PTI chief has been incarcerated since August 2023—submitted an official medical report detailing the former leader's health parameters to the Supreme Court.
International Concerns Over Detention Conditions
The judicial intervention also closely follows international scrutiny surrounding Imran Khan’s solitary confinement and medical state in prison. Last month, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on torture and other cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment, Alice Jill Edwards, publicly voiced severe concerns regarding reports of harsh detention conditions and the continuous denial of proper medical treatment to the former prime minister.
With the Supreme Court’s definitive instructions, the medical transfer is expected to be executed under tight security protocols over the coming days. The court's ruling provides significant relief to PTI supporters and Khan’s family, who have continuously raised alarms over his wellbeing, while setting strict judicial oversight on his healthcare management moving forward.
