Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has publicly rejected Donald Trump's US-led 15-point Gaza peace plan, vowing that Israel will not withdraw its forces until Hamas is completely disarmed.

The announcement marks Israel's first official and straightforward rejection of the plan. Netanyahu told the weekly cabinet meeting that Israeli forces will continue to carry out attacks in the enclave. He said Israel is still in talks with the United States about the document of the plan.

Netanyahu described Trump as the "greatest friend in the White House" -- but quickly made clear he was willing to challenge him, saying Israel was raising its objections with the United States.

Hamas, which publicly backed the plan, called on Washington to push Netanyahu. Hamas, in a statement, said it was still committed to the plan. Hamas informed U.S. President Trump's Board of Peace that it stood by the latest stage of the plan, under which the militants would hand over weapons to a nascent Palestinian governing committee in the war-battered territory.

The plan was drafted in May by Nickolay Mladenov, high representative for Gaza of the "Board of Peace," and officially announced by U.S. President Trump in late July.

Mladenov again promised that Israel would not face any obligations until Hamas gave up all its weapons -- but said Israel would eventually need to pull out.
