In a major push to boost urban tourism and environmental conservation in eastern Maharashtra, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that Nagpur's iconic and historic Ambazari Lake will be comprehensively developed as a premier tourist destination. Speaking during a high-profile inspection visit to the lake premises on August 20, 2026, the Chief Minister confirmed that the state government will allocate dedicated financial grants to support the rejuvenation and infrastructure overhaul. He praised the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) for its relentless drive to eradicate invasive water hyacinth (jalparni), which had previously enveloped large swathes of the water body and severely threatened its natural ecosystem, successfully restoring the lake to its pristine condition.

Highlighting the historical significance of Ambazari Lake, which dates back to the British era when it served as a primary water source for Nagpur city, Fadnavis noted that widespread weed growth had raised serious environmental concerns among citizens. He commended the NMC administration for using weed harvesters and heavy machinery in a targeted cleanup operation. To prevent future re-infestation, he revealed that a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) operated by the Wadi Nagar Panchayat will soon go operational to process industrial effluent flowing from the nearby MIDC corridor. Outlining the future vision, the Chief Minister stated that the state plans to introduce kayaking and various water sports at the lake, turning it into a vibrant recreational center.

Community Initiatives and Future Water Sports Vision

The successful cleanup drive was spearheaded under the leadership of Mayor Nita Thakare, along with Deputy Mayor Leela Hathibed, Standing Committee Chairperson Shivani Dani-Wakhare, Ruling Party Leader Narendra (Balya) Borkar, and Municipal Commissioner Dr. Vipin. Their coordinated governance efforts ensured the swift removal of aquatic weeds, earning widespread appreciation from local residents and environmentalists alike.

During the inspection event, Chief Minister Fadnavis felicitated local athletes practicing kayaking on the lake and presented floral bouquets to municipal officers for their outstanding execution. Expressing gratitude, Mayor Nita Thakare emphasized that the collective efforts of the municipal body and state administration have successfully revived the historic glory of Ambazari Lake, laying down a strong foundation for sustainable urban tourism in Nagpur.
