THIRUVANANTHAPURAM — India clinched a dominant eight-wicket win over West Indies in the opening match of the three-game One-Day International (ODI) series at Greenfield International Stadium on Sunday. Chasing a competitive target of 296 runs, the home side comfortably reached 300/2 in 41.4 overs, propelled by high-octane centuries from captain Shubman Gill and star batter Virat Kohli.
Earlier in the afternoon, Indian skipper Shubman Gill won the toss and elected to field. West Indies posted 295/7 in their allocated 50 overs, anchored by Justin Greaves' maiden ODI century (101 off 108 balls) and Amir Jangoo's counter-attacking 58. Wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav emerged as India's chief wicket-taker with figures of 4/40 in his 10-over quota.
Record-Breaking Partnership and Historic Milestone
India's pursuit got off to a steady start with openers Rohit Sharma (32 off 35) and Shubman Gill putting together a 70-run opening stand within the first powerplay. Following Rohit's dismissal in the 12th over, Virat Kohli joined Gill at the crease, shifting the momentum completely in India's favor.
The duo stitched together a commanding 151-run partnership for the second wicket off just 132 deliveries. During the course of his inning, Kohli crossed the historic threshold of 15,000 runs in ODI cricket, becoming only the second batsman in international cricket history after Sachin Tendulkar (18,426 runs) to achieve the milestone. Gill notched his 10th ODI century, scoring 110 off 108 balls (13 fours, 1 six) before being caught out off Roston Chase.
Dominant Finish and Series Advantage
Unfazed by Gill's departure at 229/2, Kohli accelerated through the final overs alongside Ruturaj Gaikwad (13 not out off 19 balls). Kohli completed his 55th ODI hundred in 74 balls and went on to finish unbeaten on 139 off 88 deliveries, striking 10 boundaries and 9 towering sixes. He sealed the match in style with back-to-back sixes off Keacy Carty in the 42nd over.
With this victory, India takes a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. The second ODI is scheduled to take place at the ACA Stadium in Guwahati on Wednesday, September 30.
