In a major operational development in the ongoing investigation into the alleged harassment and molestation of a Class 10 student in Bihar’s Jamui district, prime accused Nandan Yadav was apprehended on Tuesday following a police encounter. Police officials confirmed that Yadav sustained a gunshot injury to his leg during an exchange of fire with law enforcement personnel and was subsequently transferred under armed guard to a government medical facility for emergency treatment.

The confrontation unfolded as district authorities intensified operations to apprehend the suspects identified from visual footage that circulated widely online. The incident has attracted significant public attention, prompting swift administrative scrutiny, legal interventions, and debate regarding public safety in the region.

Circumstances of the Police Operation and Arrest

According to senior Bihar Police officials, including Additional Director General (CID, Weaker Sections) K.S. Anupam and Jamui Superintendent of Police Vishwajit Dayal, an operational team acted on specific intelligence regarding Yadav’s whereabouts. When officers surrounded the suspect and ordered him to surrender, an exchange of gunfire reportedly ensued, culminating in Yadav sustaining a non-fatal bullet wound to his leg.

Another suspect, identified by investigators as Hareram Yadav, was also apprehended during the coordinated operation. Police stated that the latest detentions take the total number of individuals apprehended in the case to five, which includes three suspects—two of whom are juveniles—taken into custody a day earlier. Investigators confirmed that approximately seven to eight individuals have been identified in connection with the incident, with sustained raids currently underway to trace remaining absconders.

Origins of the Case and Ongoing Investigation

The underlying case stems from an incident that occurred on the evening of Saturday, September 19, on the outskirts of Jamui. According to statements recorded by the police, the Class 10 girl and a male classmate were returning home on a two-wheeler after attending private coaching classes when they were intercepted near the Marwa Hill area by a group of youths.

The victims were allegedly forced off the vehicle, interrogated, verbally abused, and physically assaulted. Video recordings captured by the perpetrators showed the suspects attempting to restrain the female student and subjecting her to inappropriate physical conduct, while her classmate was manhandled as they both pleaded for assistance. The students managed to flee the location after the confrontation lasted an estimated 15 to 20 minutes.

Upon the emergence of the recordings on social platforms, district authorities formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Deepti Monali to trace the victims and identify the accused. A formal First Information Report (FIR) was registered based on the victim’s written complaint under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Administrative and Regulatory Measures

Beyond the primary criminal probe, law enforcement agencies have initiated measures to curb the secondary distribution of the visual evidence. Highlighting statutory provisions prohibiting the disclosure of a minor victim’s identity, the Bihar Police filed FIRs against operators of approximately 120 social media accounts found disseminating the recordings. Formal requests were also issued to digital platforms to take down all associated media.

Concurrently, statutory bodies, including the National Commission for Women (NCW) and the Bihar State Women’s Commission, took official cognisance of the matter. NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar addressed a formal communication to the Director General of Police in Bihar seeking comprehensive investigative action and demanding a detailed action-taken report within seven days.
