Northern Railway's Jammu Division earned more than ₹66.50 lakh through a special ticket-checking drive conducted during May 2026 to curb ticketless and irregular travel and safeguard railway revenue.

According to official figures, the division registered 12,693 cases of ticketless travel and other travel irregularities up to May 31. The enforcement drive generated a total revenue of ₹66,50,165 through penalties imposed on passengers travelling without valid tickets, passes, platform tickets and other required travel documents.

The intensive checking campaign was carried out by ticket-checking staff at railway stations, onboard trains and on platforms across the division.

Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, Jammu, Uchit Singhal, said ticketless travel not only causes financial losses to the Railways but also creates inconvenience for genuine passengers by leading to overcrowding, illegal occupation of seats and security concerns.

He said special checking squads are regularly deployed to discourage such practices and ensure a fair travel environment for passengers.

Singhal emphasized that the objective of the drive is not merely revenue collection but also creating awareness among travellers. He urged passengers to purchase valid tickets through reservation centres, the UTS App, the IRCTC platform or ticket counters before commencing their journey.

He also advised visitors coming to receive or see off passengers to obtain platform tickets. Travelling without a valid ticket can attract penalties and legal action under Sections 137 and 138 of the Railways Act, 1989.

Northern Railway said such enforcement drives will continue in the future to promote transparency and provide better facilities to honest passengers.
