India’s real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) registered a growth rate of 7.8% during the first quarter (April–June) of the financial year 2026-27, up from 6.9% recorded during the corresponding period of the previous fiscal year. The quarterly estimates released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) on Monday, August 31, 2026, underline sustained economic momentum despite ongoing global headwinds and supply chain disruptions.

The data indicates broad-based performance across key sectors. The tertiary (services) sector led the expansion with a 10% growth rate at constant prices, supported by strong demand in real estate and IT services. The secondary (manufacturing and construction) sector registered a growth of 8.6%, while the primary sector grew by 2.9%, underpinned by a 3.6% growth in the agriculture and allied activities sector.

Comprehensive Economic Indicators for Q1 FY27

The official report outlines key national accounting parameters for the first quarter of the fiscal year:

* Real GDP Growth: 7.8% (versus 6.9% in Q1 FY26) * Nominal GDP Growth: 10.3% (versus 8.1% in Q1 FY26) * Real Gross Value Added (GVA): 8.2% * Nominal Gross Value Added (GVA): 11.5%

Speaking to the media, the Secretary of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation noted that the growth trajectory highlights the inherent resilience and domestic demand strength of the Indian economy amid high international energy prices and global trade uncertainties.

Official Leadership Reacts to Quarterly Performance

Following the data release, Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the quarterly economic figures in a public statement, describing the 7.8% GDP growth as a testament to the collective effort of the nation's workforce and industries. The Prime Minister emphasized that strong domestic fundamentals helped offset external challenges, including crude oil volatility and supply chain disruptions affecting global markets.

With the first-quarter figures establishing a strong foundation, economic analysts project that sustained public infrastructure spending and private consumption will continue supporting national growth estimates through the remainder of FY 2026-27.
