India's solar energy journey has reached a new milestone. For the first time, India has surpassed the United States in terms of annual solar energy capacity additions, cementing its position as the world's second-largest nation in terms of solar capacity expansion in 2025.

According to the latest report by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), India added over 37 gigawatts of solar capacity in 2025, while the United States expanded its capacity by 34 gigawatts. With this achievement, India has secured the second position globally in terms of annual solar capacity growth. This feat underscores the rapid energy transition currently underway in the country and the growing potential within its renewable energy sector.

In 2014, India's solar capacity stood at a mere 2.65 gigawatts. It took the country 96 months to reach the 50-gigawatt mark, whereas the subsequent 50 gigawatts were added in just 36 months. The fastest growth was recorded during the journey from 100 to 150 gigawatts—a milestone achieved in a span of merely 14 months, between January 2025 and March 2026.

Surpassing Japan, India has also earned the distinction of becoming the world's third-largest producer of solar energy. According to IRENA statistics, India generated over 108,000 gigawatt-hours of solar electricity—a figure significantly higher than Japan's output of 96,000 gigawatt-hours.

The financial year 2025-26 proved to be a record-breaking year for India's solar energy sector. During this period, the country added 44.61 gigawatts of solar capacity—nearly double the previous year's record of 23.83 gigawatts. These figures are significantly higher than the annual target of 34 gigawatts.
