India's Department of Atomic Energy has inaugurated the world's first hydrogen production facility based on the Copper-Chlorine thermochemical cycle using nuclear process heat from the Fast Breeder Test Reactor at the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research in Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu.

The facility was inaugurated by Atomic Energy Commission Chairman and DAE Secretary Ajit Kumar Mohanty.

Developed jointly by Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research and Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, the technology demonstrates carbon-free hydrogen production using nuclear energy.

The Department of Atomic Energy said the breakthrough will strengthen India's clean energy transition, support the country's decarbonisation goals, and advance indigenous nuclear innovation.
