Mumbai (Special Correspondence) : As the scorching heat intensifies across the state, the administration has now adopted a stricter stance. The State Government has issued a stern warning that strict legal action will be initiated against any concerned official or organization found deploying traffic police, marketing personnel, delivery personnel, or other field staff for duty during the peak heat hours—specifically between 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM. The administration has signaled that there will be absolutely no leniency shown toward those who recklessly endanger the lives of these workers.
A list of 15 "highly sensitive" districts—where mercury levels are currently reaching record highs—has been officially released by the state administration. This list primarily comprises the districts of Jalgaon, Nandurbar, Dhule, Latur, Amravati, Yavatmal, Washim, Akola, Buldhana, Nagpur, Wardha, Chandrapur, Gondia, Bhandara, and Nanded.
Deploying Workers in the Sun Will Prove Costly
According to the new Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) issued by the State Government, it is now mandatory to ensure that field staff receive adequate protection from the sun during the 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM time slot.
Shift Timings Must Be Adjusted
The work shifts for traffic police, marketing executives, and manual laborers engaged in strenuous physical tasks must be rescheduled in such a manner that they are able to take a respite in the shade during the afternoon hours.
If any organization or senior official compels employees to work outdoors under the sun during this critical period, the District Administration has been empowered to initiate both administrative and criminal proceedings against them.
Key Highlights of the SOPs:
1. It is mandatory to adjust the working hours for street vendors, construction workers, traffic police personnel, sanitation staff, and delivery workers.
2. In mining belts—including the Chandrapur region—it is mandatory to ensure the availability of cool resting centers and to maintain robust ventilation systems. Special provisions have also been made to ensure the safety and well-being of female workers.
"We cannot allow the lives of the public to be put at risk due to rising temperatures. In particular, no official or organization that compels laborers to toil in the sun—especially between 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM—will be spared. Strict directives to this effect have been issued to all District Collectors."
