A profound sense of grief and shock swept through Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district on Friday, August 21, 2026, following a tragic family incident at Khavdya Hill near the Tisgaon area under Waluj MIDC. A 19-year-old youth, identified as Kunal Murlidhar Chandgude, ascended the dangerous cliff around 10:00 AM threatening to commit suicide over a family dispute. Upon receiving the information, police personnel, local villagers, and fire brigade rescue teams immediately rushed to the spot, initiating a rigorous three-hour persuasion operation. Fire personnel positioned a safety net at the base of the cliff; however, the youth continuously changed his position along the steep rocky edge, complicating rescue maneuvers.

Desperate to save their child, the youth's parents—Murlidhar Chandgude (48) and Sangeeta Chandgude (42), residents of the Zalta Phata area—also reached the cliff top, continuously pleading with him to step back. Around 1:00 PM, despite endless pleas from the crowd and his family, Kunal jumped off the edge into the deep quarry below. In a reflex action to grab and save him, his father Murlidhar lost his balance and plummeted down the cliff alongside him. Overwhelmed by severe shock and grief upon witnessing her husband and son fall onto the rocks, Sangeeta jumped off the cliff immediately after.

Incident Investigation, Community Impact, and Safety Audit Demands

All three family members suffered fatal injuries upon impact with the heavy rocks in the deep quarry and died on the spot. Local police along with rescue teams recovered the bodies from the quarry pit and dispatched them to the Government Medical College & Hospital (Ghati) for post-mortem procedures.

The sudden loss of the entire family has left the local community and emergency responders deeply traumatized. Waluj MIDC police have registered an accidental death case and launched a comprehensive inquiry into the underlying domestic dispute. Meanwhile, local residents and civic activists have renewed demands for police patrolling and robust structural safety barriers around the hazardous Khavdya Hill quarry zone to prevent recurring accidents and suicidal attempts.
