Mamata Banerjee Escalates Attack on CEC Gyanesh Kumar Over Electoral Integrity

Trinamool Congress (TMC) chairperson Mamata Banerjee has intensified her political campaign against the Election Commission of India (ECI), directing severe allegations toward Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar. Addressing the media following an INDIA bloc meeting in New Delhi on Wednesday, September 30, the former West Bengal Chief Minister accused the CEC of widespread electoral fraud. In a strongly worded statement, Banerjee called him a "thief" and a "dacoit," alleging that he orchestrated vote theft, hacked Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), and destroyed electoral equipment to manipulate election outcomes.

"He must resign immediately. Let us save the democracy and ensure the security of the people and their voting rights. If people's votes are looted and cheated, then where will the country go?" Banerjee questioned. The TMC leader alleged that EVMs were tampered with to alter results and demanded an investigation into the software engineers involved in designing the electoral software. She claimed that around 92 lakh voters in West Bengal and over 13 crore voters nationwide had been adversely affected by unjustified voter list deletions under the Special Summary Revision (SIR) exercise.

Opposition Unites to Demand Resignation and Threatens Mass Protests

The political confrontation surrounding the Election Commission has consolidated the national opposition. Prior to the New Delhi meeting, Banerjee announced that she had coordinated with senior leaders, including Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary M.A. Baby and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, to mount a unified protest strategy. The opposition block, referring to the CEC mockingly as 'Vanish Kumar,' is considering introducing an impeachment motion in Parliament and initiating large-scale street demonstrations to demand his removal and subsequent legal prosecution.

The uproar stems from recent investigative reports suggesting internal discord within the Election Commission. According to media reports, Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had reportedly raised objections multiple times over the past ten months regarding procedural decisions and orders issued unilaterally during the SIR process. The Congress party, the Left, and other regional factions like the RJD have already launched nationwide protests demanding Kumar's ouster, with some political figures demanding that the CEC turn 'approver' to face trial.

Election Commission Dismisses Allegations of Bias and Institutional Dissent

Amid the escalating political storm, the Election Commission of India has formally pushed back against the opposition's claims. Responding to the reports of internal friction, the poll panel issued a clarification rejecting the notion that the reported objections amounted to institutional dissent. The Commission maintained that all decisions related to the Special Summary Revision (SIR) and broader electoral procedures were executed with the unanimous approval of the three-member body.

The BJP has also strongly condemned the opposition's narrative. BJP leaders accused the INDIA bloc of manufacturing false allegations to undermine the credibility of independent constitutional institutions. The ruling party asserted that the opposition, led by Banerjee and the Congress, is attempting to create a false narrative of EVM tampering to justify their political challenges. Meanwhile, Banerjee has appealed to civil society, NGOs, students, and journalists to support the opposition's campaign, warning that the struggle to "protect the Constitution" will continue unabated on the streets if their demands are ignored.
