Former Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, has died at the age of 74. He made a significant contribution to establishing Qatar as a globally influential nation and expanding the country's diplomacy, media, and investment sectors.

Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani led Qatar for 18 years. In 2013, he voluntarily handed over power to his son. During his tenure, Qatar made great progress in the energy sector and strengthened its position on the global stage.

Under his leadership, the Al Jazeera news network was established in Qatar, international investment expanded, and the 2022 FIFA World Cup was successfully hosted. Sheikh Hamad's leadership is considered to be crucial in Qatar's modern development journey.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed grief over the demise of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. He was a true friend of India and will be remembered forever, the Prime Minister has expressed his condolences.

The Government of India has declared a day of national mourning today to pay tribute to Sheikh Hamad. On this day, the national flag will be flown at half-mast at all buildings across the country where it is regularly flown. No official entertainment events will be held.

Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju is likely to visit Qatar soon to express condolences on behalf of the Indian government.
