England defeated France 6-4 in a thrilling FIFA World Cup third-place playoff in Miami Gardens, Florida, on Saturday to register their best World Cup finish since winning the title in 1966.

France fought back strongly after trailing heavily in the first half, but England held on for victory. Kylian Mbappe scored twice to take his World Cup tally to 22 goals, moving ahead of Lionel Messi. His brace also took his tournament tally to 10 goals, putting him in the lead in the Golden Boot race. Michael Olise assisted both goals to take his tally to seven, breaking Pele's record for the most assists in a single World Cup, set in 1970.

Bukayo Saka completed a hat-trick with a late penalty, while Jude Bellingham scored England's sixth goal. The third-place finish is England's best performance at the World Cup since lifting the trophy in 1966.
