Devendra Fadnavis Criticizes INDIA Bloc Over Supreme Court March and CJI Comments

MUMBAI — Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis issued a scathing critique of the opposition INDIA bloc on Monday, October 12, 2026, following Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant's formal refusal to grant an audience to a protest march organized by opposition lawmakers. Addressing news agency ANI in Mumbai, Fadnavis questioned the legal and constitutional rationale behind demanding a meeting with the head of the judiciary via a street demonstration, describing the opposition's actions as anti-constitutional and harmful to democratic norms.

"Where does the Constitution state that the Chief Justice of India has to meet a protest march? What the Supreme Court has stated is correct: if you have a grievance, you should approach the court and fight legally," Fadnavis stated. He further alleged that the opposition's sharp rhetoric following the CJI's decision revealed a deeper institutional bias. "The opposition has proven once again that they have no faith in the Constitution and are anti-constitutional. When the Chief Justice lawfully discharged his constitutional duties and stated he could not meet a protest march, they resorted to hurling abuse at him. This is a conspiracy to demonize India's judicial institutions and erode public trust," he added.

Chief Justice Declines Meeting Request, Citing Pending Litigation and Judicial Neutrality

The controversy follows a high-voltage march called by Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, and allied INDIA bloc leaders from Parliament Street toward the Supreme Court of India. The opposition coalition intended to hand over a formal memorandum demanding the halting of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists, an investigation into alleged electoral roll anomalies, and the immediate resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Responding publicly to the appointment request sent on Sunday evening, CJI Surya Kant clarified on Monday morning that he had communicated his inability to meet the delegation. The Chief Justice explained that the issues raised in the opposition's memorandum are already pending before judicial benches of the apex court, making an out-of-court administrative meeting with political demonstrators inappropriate. CJI Surya Kant emphasized that the doors of the Supreme Court remain open to all citizens, including elected representatives, provided they approach through appropriate judicial petitions rather than street marches.

Political Escalate as Opposition Accuses Government and Judiciary of Disregarding Public Grievance

The CJI's refusal drew sharp criticism from opposition leaders, with Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut and Congress leaders expressing dissatisfaction over the apex court's response. Opposition figures contended that their delegation sought a brief institutional dialogue regarding fundamental voting rights and alleged disenfranchisement during the ongoing voter revision drive across multiple states.

Addressing reporters during the march, opposition representatives maintained that peaceful assembly and petitioning constitutional heads are legitimate democratic rights. They argued that administrative and procedural barriers should not prevent constitutional authorities from receiving representations regarding widespread public grievances over electoral rolls.

Ruling Alliance Defends Judicial Autonomy and Warns Against Pressure Tactics

Joining Chief Minister Fadnavis, several senior leaders from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Mahayuti alliance, including Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, condemned the opposition's march to the apex court. Ruling alliance leaders accused the opposition of attempting to pressure the judiciary and delegitimize constitutional mechanisms after facing administrative and legal setbacks.

Legal experts and political commentators noted that the judiciary...
