A high-speed law enforcement operation unfolded in Tamil Nadu's Coimbatore district on Sunday morning when personnel from the Kovilpalayam Police Station intercepted a vehicle involved in contraband smuggling following a 40-kilometer pursuit along Avinashi Road. The operation resulted in the arrest of three individuals and the seizure of approximately 300 kilograms of banned gutkha and tobacco products transported from Bengaluru.

The pursuit originated in the Vilankurichi area after Kovilpalayam police received specific intelligence indicating that a group of suspects was moving prohibited commercial goods via a four-wheeler. When police units signaled the driver to pull over for a routine check, the vehicle accelerated, prompting an immediate mobile pursuit toward the Avinashi highway corridor.

High-Speed Pursuit and Tactical Interception

During the initial phase of the pursuit, police patrol vehicles maneuvered close to the fleeing car. In an attempt to physically obstruct the vehicle's escape, Head Constable Velmurugan climbed onto the exterior roof structure of the moving automobile. The driver maintained high speeds across busy arterial roads and cleared a toll plaza barrier after making an automated FASTag payment while the officer remained positioned on top of the vehicle.

Motorists travelling along the highway recorded footage of the incident as the vehicle traversed district boundaries. Recognizing the operational risk, Kovilpalayam police coordinated with neighboring Tiruppur district law enforcement units, local highway patrol teams, and emergency medical services to set up road blocks ahead.

Apprehension of Suspects and Legal Proceedings

The pursuit concluded near a commercial establishment on Avinashi Road, where responding police vehicles and emergency services created a perimeter, bringing the suspect car to a complete stop. One occupant was taken into custody at the scene, while two others who attempted to flee on foot were apprehended shortly after following a search operation by local police teams.

Preliminary police interrogations revealed that the three detained individuals are residents of Rajasthan. Investigators stated the suspects had transported the seized contraband from Bengaluru with the intention of distributing it across local markets in Coimbatore. Law enforcement authorities have confiscated the vehicle and registered cases under relevant provisions governing illegal tobacco trade.
