The death toll in the tragic Chamoli tunnel accident has risen to eight after rescue teams recovered another worker's body from the debris on August 16, 2026. Joint disaster response teams—comprising the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), local police, and district administrative officials—are working around the clock under demanding conditions to clear sludge, pump out excess water, and locate the two workers who remain unaccounted for inside the under-construction tunnel.
The disaster struck on Thursday evening at approximately 7:00 PM when a sudden, heavy inflow of water flooded the subterranean construction site, carrying massive quantities of silt and debris into the shaft. A total of 22 workers were actively engaged in construction operations inside the tunnel when the surge occurred. While 12 workers managed to escape or were rescued early with injuries and immediately rushed to nearby medical facilities for specialized treatment, several others were trapped beneath the dense accumulation of mud.
Disaster Response Operations and Safety Directives
Rescue operations face severe technical challenges due to continuous water seepage, mud accumulation, and structural vulnerabilities within the tunnel shaft. Disaster response personnel are utilizing heavy-duty dewatering pumps, specialized earth-moving equipment, and life-detection sensors to clear obstructed passages and reach the innermost sections of the structure.
Monitored closely at the highest administrative levels, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami reiterated that the safety and recovery of every worker remain the state government's highest priority. The Chief Minister directed senior administrative officers and district authorities to deploy all available state resources, ensure uninterrupted rescue efforts, and provide top-quality medical care to the injured workers currently undergoing treatment.
Structural Assessments and Emergency Protocols
Engineering teams and geologists have been dispatched to the site to assess the structural integrity of the surrounding rock strata and identify the root cause of the sudden water burst. Preliminary reports suggest that an undetected underground aquifer or localized flash seepage triggered the sudden breach during excavation activities.
As search teams push deeper into the remaining obstructed zones to locate the two missing individuals, local authorities have established emergency support centers to assist the families of the victims. State officials assured that comprehensive inquiries will be conducted into safety protocols at the construction site once rescue operations conclude.
