British Columbia declared a provincial state of emergency on Saturday as wildfires burned across western Canada, forcing thousands of residents to leave their homes.

Homes and properties have been lost and destroyed. Some people became trapped as conditions changed very quickly and needed to be rescued, even as the situation remained threatening.

Thousands of residents in the region were ordered to evacuate earlier on Saturday as a fast-moving wildfire nearly doubled in size overnight.

The Bald Range wildfire grew to around 9,500 hectares, prompting evacuation orders in Summerland, Peachland and nearby areas west of Okanagan Lake.

The blaze has affected farms, threatened properties and disrupted power supply in some areas. Around 1,500 firefighters have been deployed across British Columbia to battle more than 100 wildfires amid hot and dry conditions.
