He emphasized that August 14 serves as a critical national occasion to recall the immense sacrifices, communal trauma, and resilience of those who were uprooted from their ancestral homelands during one of the largest and most tragic human migrations in recorded global history.
Reflecting on the historical chain of events that culminated in the tragedy, Nabin pointed out that when the Two-Nation Theory was formally discussed in the Lahore Resolution of 1940, discerning citizens realized that India’s eventual freedom might come with the heavy and devastating price of territorial division. He noted that the ideological seeds sown during that period laid the tragic groundwork for widespread societal fractures that ultimately disrupted the socio-cultural fabric of the Indian subcontinent.
Tracing the Historical Outbreak of Communal Violence
Recalling key historical turning points, the BJP National President highlighted the horrors of Direct Action Day on August 16, 1946, which unfolded on the streets of Calcutta (now Kolkata) and triggered catastrophic communal violence across several provinces. He noted that during this turbulent period, over 1.5 crore (15 million) people were forcibly uprooted from their homes and forced to migrate across newly drawn borders in desperate search of basic safety, abandoning their lifelong savings, ancestral properties, and livelihoods.
Nabin emphasized that millions of innocent citizens lost their lives in the violent clashes that erupted from Rawalpindi to various districts across Punjab, Bengal, and adjoining regions. He also recalled Mahatma Gandhi’s historic peace march through Calcutta, which took place amidst widespread devastation and massive human displacement, underscoring the sheer scale of suffering that ordinary people endured.
Preserving Historical Awareness for Future Generations
Commending Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s landmark decision to officially designate August 14 as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day (*Vibhajan Vibhishika Smriti Diwas*), Nabin asserted that solemn observance ensures the nation never forgets this dark chapter of history. He underlined that remembering the tragedy is not intended to reignite past animosities, but to honor the victims, foster national unity, and remind citizens of the paramount importance of social harmony.
The BJP President concluded his address by appealing to educational institutions, youth organizations, and social bodies to actively educate the younger generation about the Partition tragedy.
