The State Government is taking steps to make a basic knowledge of the Marathi language mandatory for auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers in Mumbai.

In this regard, a review meeting was held yesterday under the chairmanship of the State Transport Minister, Pratap Sarnaik. Marathi litterateurs and office-bearers of various rickshaw driver associations were invited to attend this meeting.

However, Minister Sarnaik expressed displeasure over the fact that some office-bearers boycotted the meeting. He made it clear that no one would succeed in their attempts to create a rift between Marathi and Hindi speakers for the sake of political gain.

He also informed that all necessary preparations have been completed to impart basic Marathi language training to rickshaw and taxi drivers, enabling them to communicate effectively with passengers.
