Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma chaired a comprehensive high-level review meeting to assess the prevailing law and order scenario and evaluate various operational aspects of police administration across the state. The meeting, held at Lok Sewa Bhawan in Guwahati on August 17, 2026, brought together top leadership and senior bureaucrats from the state Home Department alongside high-ranking officers of Assam Police. The primary objective of the session was to streamline law enforcement strategies, accelerate structural reforms, and enhance administrative accountability across urban and rural policing jurisdictions throughout Assam.

During the strategic deliberations, Chief Minister Sarma reviewed a wide spectrum of key policy priorities, including the state’s decisive crackdown on social evils such as child marriage and polygamy. The meeting conducted a thorough audit of crime control measures, emphasizing the need for proactive intelligence gathering, swift forensic investigation, and time-bound legal prosecution to ensure significantly higher conviction rates for criminal offenders. Discussions also centered on comprehensive structural reforms within auxiliary forces, specifically the Home Guards and the Village Defence Party (VDP), to maximize their operational efficiency in grassroots vigilance and community policing.

Modernization of Infrastructure and Emergency Response

The Chief Minister placed special emphasis on strengthening public safety infrastructure by directing officials to upgrade and expand the technical capabilities of the emergency Dial-112 service for faster response times. The meeting also evaluated the progress of various ongoing police battalion infrastructure projects and reviewed state-sponsored welfare initiatives, including dedicated housing schemes for police personnel stationed across different districts.

To optimize operational effectiveness and improve accessibility for local communities, Chief Minister Sarma instructed police leadership to expedite the redrawing and rationalization of police station boundaries based on demographic shifts and geography. Emphasizing his vision for institutional transformation, the Chief Minister directed law enforcement agencies to work collectively toward building a modern, highly trained, technologically adept, and genuinely people-centric police force capable of ensuring long-term peace, security, and institutional integrity across Assam.
